BOARD MEETING SUMMARY:

The regularly scheduled August 13 board meeting was held in the classroom at Edward Jones Investment Co. in Mesa. Present were Mike Faschingbauer, Jim Lowe, Jim Minturn, Larry Kuck, Terry Cross, Myrna Cross, Ron McKee, Neil Leverance, Ed Cole, and Bob Burleson. Absent Ron Hedtke.

Mike called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.

We reviewed the events and announcements published in the Communicator. It was concluded many members and guests participated and enjoyed these events. It time now for a new set of members to volunteer to be on the board.

Remember, during September and October, a slate of nominee must be selected. During the November an election must be held for next year's volunteers.

It was decided to use the proposed ticket format. The purchase was approved for a manual numbering machine for use in applying unique numbers on each ticket and its stub.

Neil gave a summary of the Repeater Owners coordination meeting at Fort Tuthill.

Neil offered to sell LMR 400 coaxial cable to members for 10 cents per foot. On a one-time occasion at the August 20 general meeting.

It was recommended a SARC Hamfest announcement be sent to AES and HRO.

GENERAL MEETING SUMMARY:

The regularly scheduled general meeting was held on Tuesday, August 20 in the classroom at RadioShack.com in Mesa.

Vice President Rom McKee called the meeting order at 7:00 pm.

The treasurer reported on the amount of money in the general fund and in the repeater fund.

The secretary presented a summary on the minutes for the board meeting.

In response to a question from the membership, Larry reported the club website still needs more work. It will eventually be http://www.qsl.net.

The Hamfest chairman circulated the present status of the volunteers for the SARC Hamfest in December. It was requested additional volunteers sign the assignment sheet. Also a sample of the Hamfest raffle ticket was circulated. There are six tickets on one 8 ½ by 11 inch sheet of colored paper. Each person receiving the Communicator will receive one sheet. On each sheet, there are instructions to mail the money and the ticket stub to SARC's post office box.

There will be special observation of Pearl Harbor Day on December 7,8, and 9. Steve Gurley is making the plans and needs hams to operate equipment on several bands. Please let Steve know how you can help.

Myrna Cross, our ARCA rep, presented a summary of the ARCA meeting at Fort Tuthill. There were many important subjects but two items are worthy of emphasis. The Arizona legislature is considering a statute banning the use of cell phones while driving. Some on the committee are also considering banning the use of ham radios while driving. Please contact your state representative and convince him/her that a ban on ham radios would remove significant emergency support. Also, remind them that hams have had many, many years of safe usage and by and large mobile radios are used sparingly.

Dianne Hoffman asked that our Hamfest announcements state that VE testing registration is from 8:00 am to 10:00 am with testing from 10:00 am to 12:00.

The speaker was Mr. Cliff Bailey, WA7GBL. Mr. Bailey is an employee of APS (Arizona Power Systems). Every member took home a multi-page release covering each topic. There are extra copies available for those not in attendance. Cliff had a overhead presentation and samples of connection devices. The major topics were:
(1) Grounding of home wiring, ham antennas, communication equipment, and computers;
(2) lightning's nature and how to protect yourself and your equipment; which surge protectors will do any good;
(3) various problems with electrical interference.

Upcoming Programs

Ron McKee, KD7FGY, program chairman for the Superstition ARC, announces the program for the next general meeting: Jim Pierce, N7QVW, will be asking for help with the MS150 bike ride. Also he will show a video on last year's MS150 bike ride.  (This was the September meeting.)

October: Jack Crabtree, AA0P, from the Arizona Near Space Research will show a video on the balloon that was launched at Ft. Tuthill and explain the whole event.

November: Annual Junque Auction. Bring all your treasures. Also this is election month. If you want to help the club let us know.

December: Holiday party, dinner and award ceremonies. No general meeting.

VOLUNTEERS:

The Arizona Science Center is looking for help with their Ham Radio display. For more information, contact Bob Burleson, KG7QJ, at 480-961-1109. I am also looking for anyone that is volunteering on any events so that the club can recognize their efforts.

Here is the latest news regarding the upgrades to the W7ASC amateur radio station.

Two 5" conduits have been run on the outside of the Science Center to accommodate 3 runs of 7/8" hard line, 3 runs of 9913, and 3 runs of control cable. The hard line will be used for amateur television and satellite communications. Two of the control cables will be used to run our azimuth and an elevation rotor, the other is a spare. The 9913 was installed for future use. The installation was performed by Call Tech Communications of Glendale, AZ.

Buck, K7IOG, donated an antenna for amateur television. It is a 10 foot long J-beam tuned for the ATV portion of the 70cm band. The antenna has been mounted using a stand off on our tower. It is barely visible from the ground. I have tested both the transmit and receive from the station and we are sending and receiving excellent quality full color transmissions. Right now the amateur television transceiver is being housed in a Tupperware container for safekeeping. This is to keep it out of harms way. The Science Center will be building us a Plexiglas enclosure, which will look much better.

The ATV transceiver, television and VCR are to be left on at all times. When there is no ATV signal present there should be a blue screen on the TV, as soon as someone starts transmitting ATV signals the screen will pick up the transmission. This week the AATV club (Arizona Amateurs on TV) have been transmitting NASA Select video from the space shuttle mission.

Our next step is to complete the transmit portion of the station. We have ordered a small camera with a built in microphone and a transmit ID board that will overlay the W7ASC call sign on the video image. The camera will be equipped with a wide-angle lens and left in a fixed position optimized for group shots in the ham shack. In the future we may add additional cameras.

Since the majority of our operators are not familiar with ATV we will be holding an ATV orientation class at the Science Center for those who are interested in running the ATV setup. I will send out another e-mail to let everyone know when the class will be held. I also would like to encourage anyone who is interested in ATV to attend the AATV meetings at the American Red Cross building on the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm. The Red Cross building is located just North of Bethany Home Road on the North side frontage road. You can also check into their website for further information:

http://www.w7atv.com

Once our ATV station is complete we will focus our energies on setting up the satellite communication system.

That's all for now.

Sign up today for the MCC No-Code Technician license classes. Earn your "Ham" license in just 9 weeks. The classes are planned to prepare you for the "no-code" Amateur Radio Technician license. Class material is based on the ARRL book "Now You're Talking" (4th edition) containing the new Technician license question pools as of April 15th., 2000

"Hams" with the Technician no-code FCC Amateur Radio license have privileges on all Amateur frequencies above 50 MHz. With the "No Code" license you can operate SSB or FM voice, Amateur TV, Packet, Satellite, and many other modes. One of the more popular modes is FM voice operation on the 2 Meter VHF and 70-cm UHF bands. Among other privileges, this allows licensees to operate using an "HT", or Handy-Talkie, a cellular-phone size radio with the ability to talk to other Hams miles away, statewide through a system of repeaters, and call regular phone numbers using some of the local "phone-patch" repeaters.

Morse code instruction will be available on request. Technicians who pass a 5 WPM Morse code test are entitled to limited power outputs on certain HF frequencies. "Technicians with HF" may operate on the 80, 40, and 15-meter bands using CW, and on the 10-meter band using CW, voice, and digital modes.

We will be setting up the No-Code Technician amateur radio license testing session on the last day of class, Saturday, November 17th at 10 am at Mesa Community College. Other testing opportunities will be announced. If you are interested in getting an Amateur Radio license or getting back in to Amateur Radio, contact MCC Community Education at 480-461-7700.
