BOARD MEETING SUMMARY:

The regularly scheduled September 11 board meeting was canceled out of respect for the victims of the World Trade Center disaster.

On September 18, a board meeting was held at 6:30 pm before the general meeting. It was recommended the SARC Hamfest bulletins be sent to AES and HRO.

The general membership should be reminded to look for candidates for SARC offices to be nominated in the October general meeting.

The ARRL application for the ARRL approval of the Hamfest was submitted to and approved by the Southwest Division Director. This is now a sanctioned Hamfest.

The Hamfest chairman reminded all members that only about half of the assignments for the December Hamfest have volunteers. This year SARC will be providing volunteers for every activity. Many organizations are watching to see if SARC can do it. Each able member should allocate a few hours during Friday November 30 or Saturday, December 1, 2001.

There will be a Christmas Party in December.

GENERAL MEETING SUMMARY:

The regularly scheduled general meeting was held on Tuesday, September 18 in the classroom at RadioShack.com in Mesa.  President Mike Faschingbauer, KB7RMG, opened the meeting at 7:00 pm.

The membership observed a moment of silence out of respect for the victims in the World Trade Center disaster.

The first presenter was Jim Pierce, N7QVW. Jim is a significant member of ARA, Arizona Repeater Association, and Amateur Radio Public Service Group (ARPSG).  Jim's topics:

  1. ARPSG is offering a class on October 13 at the Red Cross, Piper Center, on the Interstate 17 northbound road, north of Bethany Home Road. This class will be a combination of lecture and simulation exercises. Knowing what to do in disaster comes with practice working with your radios, working with nets, and working with other agencies. The class will cost $10 and includes lunch and snacks, and is payable at the start of class. Lecture material and current Public Service manual will be provided.

  2. On October 14, the RACE FOR THE CURE is scheduled. Ham radio operators are needed to supply communication services. Please call Jim at 623-551-1204 to offer your help.
The second presenter was Kathy Lane. She is a representative of the Inaugural LOST DUTCHMAN MARATHON.

The Lost Dutchman Marathon will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2002 in the Superstition Mountain foothills. The plans include a certified marathon, ½ marathon, 10k run, 8k desert trail run, and a 2-mile fun run/walk. Mail registration forms are available from:

 Lost Dutchman Marathon
 C/o Arizona Road Racers
 P O Box 37876
 PHOENIX, Az, 85069-7876
 Phone 480-983-1500
 Website: www.lostdutchmanmarathon.org

One purpose of the presentation was to ask SARC to provide ham radio communication support during the marathon.

The members present committed to provide 10-15 ham operators during the marathon.

In addition, Jim Pierce plans to add this event to Year 2002 list of events of ARPSG. Tentatively, SARC will be the east valley point of contact for all ARPSG events.
