BOARD MEETING SUMMARY:

The Superstition Amateur Radio Club convened its regular board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2001 in the offices of Edward Jones in Mesa.

Present were: Terry Cross, Myrna Cross, Larry Kuck, Ron McKee, and Jim Minturn, Jim Lowe, and Ed Cole. Absent were Mike Faschingbauer and Bob Burleson.

Ron McKee announced the speaker for the October 16 general meeting. It will be Jack Crabtree, AA0P. The subject will be the latest activities for ANSR.

Ed Cole, Hamfest chairman, was directed to

  1. Visit Dave Reynolds to review the ARCA hardware: public address speakers and ticket tumbler.
  2. Prepare a windshield sign to put in vehicle signifying parking fee payment by vendors.
  3. 3. Circulate the Hamfest assignment sheet at the general meeting to locate more volunteers.
The consensus was to move the picnic date to November 10 or 17 to remove the conflict with the MS150 Best Dam Ride planned for November 3-4.

The general meeting on November 20th will include election of the next year officers and a junk auction.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:18 PM.

GENERAL MEETING SUMMARY:

Vice President, Ron McKee called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

The business of the club was discussed first:

  • ARRL sent a letter approving the Hamfest as an ARRL event.

  • Dick Reid, K7RRR, has had a successful heart transplant. A phone call during the meeting indicated Rich is doing well. He is in the UMC in Tucson.
  • Ed Cole was directed to locate trash barrels and barriers for use at the Hamfest.
  • Steve Gurley, KJ7WK, and Art Hoffman, W7ART, are in charge of a special event on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. So far there are operators on 10, 15, 20, and 40 meters. Contact either Steve or Art.

The speaker was Jack Crabtree, AA0P. The subject was AMATEUR RADIO BALLOONING. Mr. Crabtree is the co-founder of Edge of Space Sciences (EOSS). The first flight was in November 1990. EOSS was formed in 1991. It is incorporated in Colorado as a non-profit 501©(3) scientific educational organization. EOSS's mission is to promote science and education through amateur radio and high altitude balloons. While known as an amateur radio group, membership is open to all interested persons. EOSS has conducted 45 high altitude balloons flights.

Mr. Crabtree is now a resident of Gilbert, Arizona. He has formed an amateur radio balloon group (ANSR) in Arizona. This group will be focused on "promoting science and education through amateur radio and high altitude balloons" If you would like to get on the mailing list, and receive additional information about this group, including meetings, contact Jack Crabtree at mailto:jackie@uswest.net. The group meets on the fourth Monday at the RadioShack.com meeting room at 7:00 pm. The mailing address is AA0P, 938 W Juniper Avenue, Gilbert, AZ, 85233.

Mr. Crabtree presented a video of a recent successful launch.

ANSR plans a balloon launch on December 1. They plan to set up the control station at the December 1 Hamfest. The balloon launch site will be from a remote site.

VOLUNTEERS:

The Arizona Science Center is looking for help with their Ham Radio display. For more information, contact Bob Burleson, KG7QJ, at 480-961-1109. I am also looking for anyone that is volunteering on any events so that the club can recognize their efforts.

A QUICK NOTE:

HAMFESTS / SPECIAL EVENTS:

SARC HAMFEST: Arizona Near Space Research is going to launch a balloon on December 1st, weather permitting, and will have a station at our Hamfest monitoring the flight of the balloon. The balloon cannot be launched from the Hamfest because our urban location is rated as "class B" airspace, said Jack Crabtree, AA0P, founder of ANSR and October's guest speaker.

Next ANSR meeting is the fourth Monday of each month, at RadioShack.com, at 7 PM.

Will there be a 2m/70cm repeater on the next launch? After AA0P lost his dual band HT (the repeater) in the launch at Tuthill, there is no radio to use for this purpose. ANSR is working on using a couple credit card size radios, if funding allows, to build another crossbander.

WEB SITE UPDATE: Larry, WB7CRK, has updated our web site. Please take the time and see what Larry has done @ http://www.qsl.net/wb7tjd/

Check it out before you forward!

We receive all these forwarded warnings in our e-mail. The latest of these to cross my desktop is the old story about the Postal Service introducing "Bill 602P" in Congress to assess a charge per e-mail message sent, to recoup lost postage revenue.

Pure garbage, plain and simple. Before you forward something to everyone on your mailing list, please check it out with one of these links first.

Already knowing it was a hoax, I selected the Urban Legends site and there found a search window. I typed in "602P" just to see what was there.

Did you know that the U.S. Senate candidate debate in New York was even touched by this? Both Senator Clinton and her opponent were asked their positions on this fictitious Bill 602P by a WCBS moderator!
