October 2009 W7ASC Column

A dear friend and long-time Ham, Bob Strauss (W7JTR) is a silent key. He passed away last month, Monday 9/14.  He was an ARRL Life Time member, a volunteer at the Science Center W7ASC Ham Shack --almost every Friday on the morning shift.  He also was a great help with the Ham license classes.  We will miss him!  His obituary is in the Washington Statesman-Examiner at

http://www.statesmanexaminer.com/content/view/11680/31/

We ended up the General class with 3 Extras (one took his test earlier) and 3 General.  4 still need to take the test.

The new Tech license class starts this Saturday Oct. 17th through to Nov. 21st (10:00am to 1:00pm).  Classes are Saturdays Oct. 17th - Nov. 21st 10:00am to 1:00pm.  So far we have 6 students signed up with the possibility of a few more as folks make up their minds to do it!

We are having some very productive meetings with the AZ Science Center folks to implement more W7ASC shack updates, get ready for some special events (JOTA, etc.) and get ready for the Superstition Hamfest December 5th.  Look for the W7ASC table!  We will have a setup to sell some older equipment, books, parts, books, junque, and books.

We are still short of volunteers.  Spread the word at your Ham Club. Call 480-961-1109 and volunteer now.  We have a CARL PPT Presentation available (operators are standing by) that can be presented to your club.  Contact me (see below) to set it up.
